Guru Singh – Spiritual Dedication to a Life in Balance
|
“It is often said that our children are our most natural resource….Because of the shrinking size of this planet, we now need to create people who relate to one another without competing with each other. We must teach humanity to know they’re created in the image of God, not to wonder what images to put on.” - Guru Singh The Artist:
Guru Singh is a yogi, teacher, writer, composer-musician, shaman, ordained minister, healer, and most importantly, “a family man”. He was born in 1945 in Seattle with a huge appetite for music. By the end of his teenage years he was playing several instruments including the guitar, piano, violin, harmonica, flute and hand drums. While attending the University of Washington, he began performing in local clubs. In early 1966 Warner Bros’ Reprise Records signed him to a recording contract and moved him to San Francisco. As a powerful voice against the war in Vietnam, Guru Singh became a target of J. Edgar Hoover’s Co-Intel-Pro. To escape this danger, Guru Singh left San Francisco’s Haight Ashbury and trained in an ancient form of musical healing in the remote mountains of southern Mexico with the Maraakame masters, an indigenous community isolated from the outside world. His experiences there are the subject of his current book “Buried Treasures”. After returning from this adventure, Guru Singh studied with spiritual leader and master of Kundalini yoga, Yogi Bhajan. Since 1969, Guru Singh has been teaching Kundalini yoga, meditation and sound healing therapy throughout the world. Guru Singh’s album, ‘The Game of Chants” featuring Seal, was released in 2001 and has been followed by two more. Working for the children of this world has led him to a renewed passion for ‘Peace on Earth.’ Joined by Seal for the “Worldsong Peace Concert” and global village at the 2002 winter Olympic Games, Guru Singh made clear his commitment – World Peace is only a matter of time. The Song:
“Guru Singh is both a shining and calming light in the world. When I first met him, it was like lighting a meditation candle. Any concerns I had about whether he would want to participate in the project, or contribute one of his most-loved songs, was relieved before words were spoken. A great teacher and an inspiring artist, Guru Singh has touched many people’s hearts including mine and Seal’s, who graces this track with his beautiful vocals. ”I Am”, one of my favorite songs on the album, is my idea of a perfect English language mantra – fill with truth and integrity, extremely musical, highly inspiring and, at times, hypnotic.” - Frank Fitzpatrick
