ANOUSHKA SHANKAR – A Rising Star, Bridging Worlds
|
““In every aspect of my life, I tend to look for the deeper side.”
“The positive flow of energy from [my audience] to me is an incredibly amazing experience.”
- Anoushka Shankar
The Artist:
Sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar has emerged as one of the shining stars in a new generation of World Music leaders. The daughter of the legendary Ravi Shankar, Anoushka is deeply rooted in Indian classical music, and continuously explores its crossover potential with electronica, jazz, flamenco and Western classical music. Her five albums have earned multiple Grammy nominations and critical acclaim for their traditional excellence and adventurous fusion of East and West. Her many guest appearances include work with Sting, Lenny Kravitz and Thievery Corporation, and collaborations with Karsh Kale and her half-sister, Norah Jones. Her developing work with Western classical musicians includes duets with acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Spreading her wings to also write and act, Anoushka authored a book about her father in 2002 and in 2004 earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination from India’s National Film Awards for her debut role in “Dance Like a Man.” That same year, she was chosen as one of 20 Asian Heroes by the Asia edition of Time magazine, and became the first Indian ambassador for the United Nations World Food Program.
The Song:
“The song Sea Dreamer carries so much subtle beauty and inspiration for the listener, not only because of the beauty of its words and enchanting melodies – but also because of the three amazing souls that came together to create it. In addition to her own unique style, Anoushka brings forth the hidden treasures of a musical lineage that has grown over many generations and touched hundreds of millions of people; Karsh is the consummate producer marrying the Indian classical traditions with contemporary classical movements; and Sting – just an unlimited source of talent and inspiration for artists, yogis and music lovers around the globe.” – Frank Fitzpatrick
