KARSH KALE – Indian Roots and Global Electronica
|
“For someone the sound of the bansuri is the sound of Krishna, while for somebody else, the sound of sub bass frequencies is a connection to spirituality.” – Karsh Kale
The Artist:
Karsh Kale is a truly global musician. Born in London to Indian parents and raised in New York, this tabla-playing producer’s music reflects diverse influences while continuously bringing it into the future. Karsh Kale began his career in music at NYU studying music production and performance. He began playing with local bands as a tabla player and drummer, and recorded with Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Amel Larouix and more.
His first solo album, “Realize,” came out in 2001 on 6 Degrees Records, establishing the young tabla-playing producer as a major force in the club-based Asian Massive movement. In 2002, Kale spearheaded the “Asian Massive” tour and compilation CD with label-mates Midival Punditz and Cheb I Sabbah. Two more solo albums, “Liberation” and “Broken English” followed, as well as collaborative projects “Tabla Beat Science” with Bill Laswell and Zakir Hussain and “Breathing Under Water” with sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar in 2007. Karsh and Anoushka also collaborated with Norah Jones and Sting on the project and were the first-ever Indian performance at the Grammys in 2007.
Kale continues to innovate as a composer and producer. He contributes to Bollywood and crossover films and television hits like “True Blood.” His dance remixes are in high demand by such artists as Paula Cole, Sting and Yoko Ono and he performs his electronica fusion live with Midival Punditz and his new ensemble “Timeline”. Karsh Kale is planted firmly at the crossroads of tradition and innovation, allowing his music to explore worlds beyond labels and convention.
The Song:
“I first met Karsh while producing an album for Sasha Lazard. I have always loved the way he has managed to keep one foot in his Indian roots and the other on the cutting edge of contemporary music and production. I was thrilled to find out he was working with Anoushka Shankar and Sting and felt it was the perfect collaboration for what I was doing with the Yoga Revolution CD: A writer/producer strongly positioned in both Indian and Western Culture pairing a beautiful artist of one of the highest regarded Eastern musical lineages (daughter of Ravi Shankar) with a global pop icon and model Western Yogi – Sting.” – Frank Fitzpatrick
