Sting
STING – Musical Legend and Dedicated Yogi
|
“Like music, yoga is a journey, one that is long enough so you keep developing, and keep learning. I don’t see an end to it…yoga is an important part of my creative life.” – Sting
The Artist:
Sting began his musical journey in the mid 70’s in Wallsend, England, playing bass in local jazz and fusion bands. After meeting Stuart Copeland and forming The Police, he dipped into punk, reggae, new wave and pop, and took the world by storm in the 80’s with a barrage of brilliant chart topping singles that earned multiple Grammy awards. Throughout the 90’s and 2000’s, Sting’s lush solo work expanded the boundaries of pop, mixing R&B, jazz and folk. After many years of genre-bending collaborations and groundbreaking world music projects, Sting has come full circle, with his upcoming Symphonicity Tour, performing pop and jazz with full orchestra in cities around the world.
Sting’s humanitarian work is equally legendary and diverse. His songwriting has always carried an intelligent social edge, addressing such issues as the cold war (“Russians”) and the mothers of the disappeared in South America (“They Dance Alone”). In the early 80’s he supported human rights with Amnesty International, and as a solo artist appeared at Live Aid and joined the “Human Rights Now” tour with Bruce Springsteen and fellow Yoga Revolution artist, Peter Gabriel. Along with wife Trudie Styler, Sting established The Rainforest Foundation in 1989 to support indigenous and traditional people of the world’s rainforests in their efforts to protect their environment, and the couple has been tireless in their work on behalf of it ever since. Both are committed and experienced yogis, which keeps Sting’s spiritual center strong as he continues to take creative risks and speak his truth.
The Song:
“The song Sea Dreamer carries so much subtle beauty and inspiration for the listener, not only because of the beauty of its words and enchanting melodies – but also because of the three amazing souls that came together to create it. In addition to her own unique style, Anoushka brings forth the hidden treasures of a musical lineage that has grown over many generations and touched hundreds of millions of people; Karsh is the consummate producer marrying the Indian classical traditions with contemporary classical movements; and Sting – just an unlimited source of talent and inspiration for artists, yogis and music lovers around the globe.” – Frank Fitzpatrick
